Velamma is an Indian Kannada language comic strip character created by the Indian artist Balakrishna Shenoy. The cartoons are typically featured in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam newspapers, with the most renowned of them being published in Andhra Prabha, Eenadu Express and Vaartha Sun Times. She has also made her appearances on Indian television channels like Sun TV, Comedy Central India and is also available for purchase on Amazon Kindle Store. Her popularity has earned her nicknames "masala auntie" or "masala auntie Velamma", which are often used when referring to her in conversations among Indians who follow these publications/channels. She is what is described as a "good-natured, trouble-making housewife". She is often seen in various situations in which she causes trouble for her husband, children, and the neighborhood. However, the situation always resolves with her good nature prevailing over.A Telugu film based on her character was planned in 2007 starring Srikanth and Sneha Ullal. The actors refused to appear in the film after it was announced because of opposition from women's rights activists. A stage play named "Velamma" by director Rajendra Talakad was staged in Hyderabad and Bangalore during July–August 2012 with actress Anju Aravind portraying the role of Velamma. The film "Velammave Veliyidai" was released in October 2014 and presented by the director G. Venkatesh, who claimed that he wanted to portray the life of a housewife in a realistic way. A web series titled Velamma: Kambalathil Mane also appeared on YouTube and was released in 2015. In 2016, Nanjundi Srinivas Mohan adapted her character to his Telugu language film "Nenu Sulikki Santu Satana Sama" starring Nani along with Malavika Avinash and Naga Chaitanya. In January 2018, a stage play "Velamma Kannukkulle" based on the character was staged in Chennai. In 2016, a Telugu short film titled "Zan" based on Velamma's character was produced by Dora Kalpakkam and released online. In 2017, a Telugu remake of Velamma titled "Vennela" was released with Allu Sirish and Radhika Pandit being the lead roles. In 2018, a Kannada remake of Velamma titled "Thisayee" was released starring Akshara Haasan and Shivaraj Kumar. Velamma is a very familiar and well-loved character. She is very playful and she likes to tease her husband, children and the neighborhood. She loves sweets and can be seen munching on chocolates or ice creams, while also reading novels such as "Wife". She attempts to get her husband addicted to watching Billu Barber's TV serial "Dharmasiri" so frequently that he loses track of time for days at a time.
